Collaborating towards a knowledge-based economy: Barclays Bank of Botswana launches 2018 Barclays F.G. Mogae Scholarship Fund to empower more Batswana

Gaborone 19 June 2018: As part of its Shared Growth Strategy, Barclays Bank of Botswana, under its Citizenship agenda, today announced the hallmark decision to invest P3 million into the Barclays F.G. Mogae Scholarship Fund to cater for undergraduate studies in addition to the opportunity to pursue Master’s Degree qualifications.

Said Barclays Bank of Botswana, Managing Director, Mrs. Reinette van der Merwe, “It is our intention through this scholarship to support the youth of Botswana with opportunities to pursue postgraduate studies that equip them with business and psychosocial skills to prosper in the future. Our priority as a financial services partner is to collaborate with stakeholders such as Rre Festus Mogae to improve people’s lives and strengthen communities. We are therefore pleased to have successfully expanded the scholarship Fund and increase the number of students in need of support in attaining higher education. It is a truly exciting time and one we look forward to seeing the results of as they contribute to the increasingly strong fabric of our society.”

The extension of the scholarship opportunity lends further support of the National Vision 2036 Pillar of Human Social Development, and has seen 38 scholarship recipients since establishment in 2008. The 2017/2018 scholarship will be extended to selected undergraduate students who are unable to cover the costs of their education. The structure of the scholarship has also been enhanced, as the Bank has partnered with four major universities to administer the programme: University of Botswana, Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) and Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN).

Concluded Mrs. Reinette van der Merwe, “We are forever grateful to the Former President of Botswana, Rre Mogae, for being the inspiration behind this scholarship’s founding, and his continued collaboration. As a proud corporate citizen, we remain committed to driving this scholarship and our other skills development programmes for Batswana.”
